Transitioning to High School

Dear Sailor,

I am getting ready for high school and am terrified about the new transition. New friends, boys, after school commitments and of course academics. What advice can you give you me to help calm my nerves? Any suggestions on how to make new friends, join/find the right clubs/after school activities and balance everything with my academics? Is it true my grades will count for college? I am so nervous...

Jam-Packed Weekends

Dear Sailor,

All my friends have jam packed weekends with sporting events, and I continually feel left out since I am not on a team. How do you explore finding a hobby if you aren’t really interested in any specific sport. How do you find that “team connection”?

Relationships

Dear Sailor,

I am really worried about getting a boyfriend or girlfriend. All my friends seem to be “in love” and I’d rather be playing sports. But because of this people say I am weird and call me names (“teasing”)-but it really hurts and I don’t know what to do.

Talk About Shootings

Dear Sailor,

Everyone is talking about the shootings at school, and I am feeling a little scared and not safe. I am not sure what details I should know before taking a stance. Everyone is participating in “walk outs” but we haven’t had any real conversations about what the walk outs mean or what I would be standing for vs just trying to get out of class... what do you think?

Handling Divorced Parents

Dear Sailor,

My parents are going through a divorce. I have a lot of friends with divorced families and some get a long and some don't. I am feeling very confused about how I should feel about this new change and separation. Should I be happy? Sad? Maybe both? I feel angry at my parents for not trying harder to resolve their "issues". What advice could you give me and them (if you have been a teen that went through you're parents divorcing?)

Teenage Me I See

Dear Sailor,

I am having a difficult time differentiating what I should and shouldn't look like as a girl my age. I constantly see pictures of girls on instagram and find myself never feeling like I measure up. I am either too thin or too "muscular". Then on top of it I get pressure because people will tell me how "beautiful" I am and I am not sure how to respond. Can you guide me? What should I look like in middle school?!

Manage Time as a Teen

Dear Sailor,

I am having a difficult time managing my time as a teen. I feel like I really need some guidance from another teen who "gets it". Any words of wisdom you could share?
