Stand UP’s “13 Reasons Why We Stand Up for Social and Emotional Health” for the #GreatGive17 is designed to connect within the community, become educated on social and emotional health topics, and provide resources for and support those struggling. This blog is to share information about the importance of education, prevention and awareness of depression.
Over the past few years, depression has threatened countless lives, especially those of teens. Recent statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health reveal that almost twenty percent of all tengagers will develop depression before reaching adulthood. Female teens, however, are at four hundred percent more risk than male teens. Emily Reback, Junior member of Women Making Waves, says, “It’s important that we recognize this large issue at hand so we can help others. The Stand UP Foundation has truly made an impact in our community and has even helped me with my struggle.” One of the stigmas the organization aims to break is that depression is a condition, or simply a mindset. It is not; in fact, depression is a mental disorder, one that causes significant daily impairment. Funds raised through the Great Give will go towards conferences and other events that break the stigmas of misunderstood disorders related to social and emotional health.
