Stand UP’s “13 Reasons Why We Stand Up for Social and Emotional Health” for the #GreatGive17 is designed to connect within the community, become educated on social and emotional health topics, and provide resources for and support those struggling. This blog is to share information about the importance of body positivity.
In the midst of a growing era of visual advertising and social media, body image is one of the most prevalent, concerning social and emotional health topics. Some of our crew days and splash seshs are themed specifically for discussions on this topic, as Stand UP Foundation addresses this topic with gender-specific programming. This allows kids to facilitate a positive discussion, sharing their experiences in a relatable environment where they can feel comfortable. Women Making Waves works especially hard with elementary and middle school girls to break their stigmas and open their eyes to reality. Senior member Paige Adams says, “Throughout our summer camps, crew days, and splash seshs, we teach kids that beauty and perfection are not solely one societal conception like we, as kids, are led to believe; it’s about being you, being kind, being confident and sharing your passions and love with others.” The Stand UP Foundation, however, can only do so with continual support- more relevantly, from the Great Give. Mia Bertuzzelli, Junior member, expresses her hope for this event’s success: that we, as an organization, can continue to “put on events to spread more awareness on topics such as these and support Stand UP as it continues to grow and prosper.”
